How to Download Optical Flares for Mac for Free
Optical Flares is a popular plug-in for designing and animating realistic lens flares in After Effects. It features a 3D lens flare engine with AE lights, an intuitive design interface, a live visual preset library, real texture support, dynamic triggering animations, chromatic aberration, and up to 32 bpc color support[^1^]. If you want to add some stunning effects to your videos, Optical Flares is a great tool to have.
However, Optical Flares is not a free plug-in. It costs $124.95 for a single license[^2^]. If you don't want to spend that much money, you might be looking for a way to download Optical Flares for Mac for free. In this article, we will show you how to do that.
Step 1: Download the Optical Flares plug-in file
The first step is to download the Optical Flares plug-in file for Mac from a reliable source. You can use the link below to download it from VFXDownload.net[^1^], a free graphics or VFX content provider website. The file size is 83.61 MB and it contains both the Windows and Mac versions of the plug-in.

Step 2: Drag the Optical Flares folder into your After Effects Plug-ins folder
The next step is to drag the entire Optical Flares folder into your Adobe After Effects Plug-ins folder. Here is an example path:
/Applications/Adobe After Effects CC/Plug-ins/Optical Flares/Optical Flares
Make sure you install it into the version of After Effects that you have, whether it is CC or an older version. Also, make sure you use the 64bit version of the plug-in if you are using After Effects CS5 or later, or the 32bit version if you are using AE7 through CS4[^2^].
Step 3: Open After Effects and apply Optical Flares to a solid
The third step is to open Adobe After Effects, create a new composition, create a new solid, and then apply Optical Flares to the solid. You can find Optical Flares under the Effect menu or by typing it in the Effects & Presets panel. See the screenshot below for how to open Optical Flares inside of After Effects.
Once it opens, copy or write down the HW-ID Fingerprint that is displayed (example below). You will need this to generate your license file in the next step.
Step 4: Log into your Video Copilot account and generate your license file
The fourth step is to log into your Video Copilot account at https://www.videocopilot.net/account/. If you don't have an account yet, you can create one for free. Once logged-in, click on the "Downloads" tab and find the Optical Flares product. Click on the download button to get to the page where you downloaded the plug-in during Step One. The license generator will be on that page.
Enter in your HW-ID Fingerprint exactly as it's shown. Sometimes "5's" can be confused with "S's" and "1's" for "I's" which can cause an invalid HWID error. Then click SUBMIT. Your license file will be downloaded to your computer[^2^].
Step 5: Drag the license file into the Optical Flares folder
The final step is to open the Optical Flares folder that you put inside of your AE Plug-ins 248dff8e21
