The film revolves around a plot involving diamonds, love, kidnapping and mistaken identities. Rajesh (Rishi Kapoor) is the son of a wealthy man who died in Africa, leaving behind a belt full of diamonds. Kishorilal (Kamal Kapoor) is a businessman who receives the belt from Rajeshs father on his deathbed and flies to India to deliver it to Rajesh. However, he is chased by goons who work for Saudagar Singh (Amjad Khan), a smuggler who wants the diamonds. Kishorilal hides the belt in a bicycle toolbox and loses track of it. The bicycle belongs to Sanjay (Tariq Khan), who is in love with Kajal (Kaajal Kiran), Kishorilals daughter. Saudagar Singh and his partner Baljit (Tom Alter) trick Rajesh into kidnapping Kajal by pretending that Kishorilal has kidnapped Saudagar Singhs son. Rajesh agrees to do so in exchange for the diamonds, unaware that Kajal is his childhood friend. What follows is a series of hilarious situations involving disguises, chases, songs and romance.

Hum Kisise Kam Nahi is considered one of the best examples of Nasir Hussains trademark style of filmmaking, which combined comedy, romance, action and music. The film has some memorable songs composed by R.D. Burman and sung by Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. Some of the popular songs are Bachna Ae Haseeno, Kya Hua Tera Wada, Hai Agar Dushman and Hum Kisise Kum Naheen. The film also features a cameo appearance by Zeenat Aman as Sunita, a singer who falls for Rajesh.

The film was inspired by several Hollywood films, such as The Pink Panther, The Sting and The Fortune Cookie. Nasir Hussain adapted the plot and added his own elements of humor and romance. He also cast his nephew Tariq Khan as the lead actor, who made his debut with this film. Tariq Khan later acted in a few more films directed by Nasir Hussain, such as Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai and Zabardast.

The film was shot in various locations in India, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kashmir. The film also featured some exotic locations in Africa, where the opening sequence was filmed. The film had a lavish production design and costumes, which added to its appeal. The film was also praised for its cinematography by Munir Khan and editing by Babu Lavande.
